About Place

 On November 16, 1664, the Government General Hospital was constructed to treat soldiers of the British East India Company. In 1878, Mary Scharlieb graduated from Madras Medical College.When Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996, the college was renamed the Chennai Medical College. It was then renamed Madras Medical College because the college was known internationally by that name. On February 28, 2010, M. Karunanidhi, the then-chief minister of Tamil Nadu, lay the foundation stone for the college's new structure. The hospital was renamed Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in January 2011.
