DakshinaChitra, which literally translates to "a picture of the south," is a living history museum in Chennai. More than 4000 artefacts are displayed in 18 houses that depict the culture, architecture, craft, and lifestyle of all four South Indian states: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, and Karnataka.DakshinaChitra is an exciting cross-cultural living museum of South Indian art, architecture, lifestyles, crafts, and performing arts. The primary mission of the museum is to exhibit, promote, and preserve aspects of the states' broader, more inclusive cultures, as well as to bring these arts to the public in a participatory, enjoyable, and engaging manner. On December 14, 1996, the DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum, a project of the Madras Craft Foundation, an NGO, opened to the public.
